St. Jerome's University has made its reputation over the years mainly through the excellence of its teaching. However, its contribution to the University of Waterloo and to higher learning in general also takes the form of strong scholarship and original research. Without this on-going work, university teaching at the University would be less rich and meaningful than it is.
The faculty in the Department of History maintain active, externally-funded research programs in various fields. Our Canadianists specialize in Canadian foreign and defence policy, with particular emphasis on the Arctic and Asia. For example, Dr. Ryan Touhey is Director of the Chanchilani India Policy Centre and Dr. Whitney Lackenbauer is co-chair of the Arctic Peoples and Security pillar of the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation/Munk School for Global Affairs Arctic Security project. Dr. Steven Bednarski currently holds a SSHRC Insight Development Grant to begin work on a reflexive microhistory of Margarita de Portu, a fourteenth-century poisoner.
