Meet Bethany a Graduating Student!
06 Feb, 2020

Graduating students are a big part of the St. Jerome’s community through helping to pass on traditions, take on leadership positions and more. This term some graduating students will be interviewed and they will share memories from their years as a St. Jerome’s student, as well as their advice for incoming students. In the second installment of this series the graduating student Bethany Hanman will be interviewed.

What is your favourite class that you have taken over your degree so far, and why is it your favourite?

It is hard to pick a favourite as I have so many that I have enjoyed! Most recently however, I really enjoyed psychology 470, a psych seminar with a special topic each term. When I took it, it was the evolutionary perspectives of mental illness and it was a really interesting way to observe a familiar topic. We had a lot of great discussions as a class and it felt like it’s own little community by the end!

What advice would you give to an incoming St. Jerome's student who is starting their degree in the fall 2020 term?

My best advice is to choose your route depending on what you truly find most interesting. For many of my classes, I honestly took them because the description was very interesting and left me wondering more about the topic. If you are passionate and curious about the course then you will naturally do better in it! I also think it is important to participate on campus to make your school life more fun! I participated in many student leader positions at SJ, and on main campus since I had the time in my schedule to be involved. These experiences helped me make new friends, and to also gain valuable skills for future career choices that I could not have learned in class!

What is your favourite St. Jerome's Memory?

I think my favourite memory at St.Jeromes was when myself and the other PALs made “the office” themed promotional videos for our events. This was a really awesome day where a few staff helped us out by being in our video, and I think it made it so much more hilarious! We had John Arnou as Dwight in our video, and it was truly a role made for him, his performance was Oscar worthy. It was so nice to work with the PAL team because we had a similar sense of humour as a group and it was hard to get the clips filmed without laughing. The nice part about this memory is we still have the videos and I am sure I will be watching them for years to come!!

What are your plans upon graduating?

Upon graduation, I am planning on working for a few years to get some experience in the field surrounding psychology. After that I am planning on doing a masters in counselling and psychotherapy, to become a licensed psychotherapist!
