Date: Monday, October 02, 2017
Former Prime Minister, The Right Honourable Paul Martin was awarded the Chancellor John R. Sweeney Award in Catholic Leadership, presented annually by St. Jerome's University to an exemplary leader living a life rooted in the values of love, truth, and justice. Sweeney, who was the first lay Chancellor of the University, was an early mover on First Nations justice issues, and Minister of Community and Social Services for the Province of Ontario, where he introduced for the first time legislation that provided for the creation of Family and Children's Services organization on First Nations territory controlled by the bands. Mr. Martin acknowledged the honour of receiving this recognition, as he knew John Sweeney well. He also identified St. Jerome’s University as “one of Canada’s great universities.”
During his remarks, the former prime minister shared a message focused on the importance of embracing Indigenous knowledge for our country and the partnership we are seeking to build. He stated, "Clearly the Indigenous worldview can no longer be ignored. It contains insights and perspectives that are crucial to the success of the world ahead and the success of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canada."
“I believe that St. Jerome’s University, with its tremendous reputation for knowledge, insight and understanding can play a major role here and I am sure it will,” added Martin, who prior to the award presentation shared time with St. Jerome's University students talking about building reconciliation and their role in that process.
