SJU Giving Tuesday Challenge Supports Student Wellness Initiatives
On Tuesday, November 30, 2021, show your support for St. Jerome’s University wellness initiatives by making a donation to the Giving Tuesday campaign. SJU student wellness is featured as one of the 35 Giving Tuesday challenges taking place across the University of Waterloo and its federated and affiliated partner campuses. Each challenge is raising money to achieve financial goals for student initiatives chosen by an event Champion, who will match donations made up to a specific amount. This year’s annual global fundraising event at SJU is being championed by former chair of the SJU Board of Governors, and alum, Mary Ellen Cullen, who will be matching donations (up to $5,000) made to SJU online on November 30th.
“I’m a believer in paying it forward,” noted Cullen, “As a SJU alum, I know that SJU is about working for the common good, caring for people in our community, and inspiring future community leaders. Please join me in this opportunity to pay it forward and support the community leaders of tomorrow.”
Each year the University joins the global Giving Tuesday movement to generate and inspire generosity and doing good in the world. Since 2012, the simple idea of following Black Friday and Cyber Monday with an online giving day has inspired millions of people worldwide to bring change to their communities. Locally SJU has championed the Giving Tuesday message with the University of Waterloo since 2014. Through it over $15,000 was raised last year for SJU initiatives. With the impact of the pandemic on student mental health, wellness, and financial resources, this year’s campaign is of particular importance.
“Giving Tuesday brings people together to support our students,” noted SJU’s President and Vice Chancellor, Peter Meehan. “All donations on Tuesday will launch what we hope will be a successful start to our annual holiday appeal, which follows in December. Mary Ellen Cullen’s support championing this effort is greatly appreciated. As one of our alum and a former chair of our Board of Governors, she understands the significant impact on students that all donations have.”
SJU’s Student Wellness Initiative Fund will provide opportunities for students to experience intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual growth. Through support from SJU’s Student Wellness Coordinator, the fund will ensure students feel welcome and supported on their educational journeys.
All members of the SJU community are encouraged to participate in the Giving Tuesday campaign this year by making a donation directly to the SJU Challenge page using the following link. All gifts made through the Giving Tuesday site will receive a tax receipt for the full value of the gift. To monitor progress on SJU’s fundraising for student wellness, and all other challenges going on across the UWaterloo campus, check out the UWaterloo Giving Tuesday website page.
Donors will be directed to a central tracking system supporting all UWaterloo partners participating in the Giving Tuesday event. Responses to your online contribution will be generated by this system. Please be reassured that your donation has been made directly to the SJU campaign.
