Michael Pautler Welcomed on Board
St. Jerome’s University (SJU) is pleased to welcome Michael Pautler as the new chair of its Board of Governors, as of July 2021. The leadership role includes overseeing a 22-member Board responsible for governance matters and ensuring that the University fulfills its legal and financial obligations as an institution. It oversees the mission driven activity of the institution, and its alignment with its foundational mission as a Roman Catholic university. The Board delegates responsibility for day-to-day operations to the President, with matters of an academic nature being guided by the SJU Senate Council, which reports back to the Board of Governors.
Outgoing Chair, Mary Ellen Cullen, has been on the board since 2012, and chair since 2018: a time of significant transition at the university. Cullen supported the Interim Presidency of Scott Kline; and the executive searches and hires of current President and Vice Chancellor, Peter Meehan and incoming Vice President Academic and Dean, Carol Ann MacGregor. Pautler will actively assume this role in October, when the board returns to its bi-monthly meeting schedule.
Pautler is the Owner Principal of M. W. Pautler & Associates, a consulting and management company, that offers expertise in educational management, leadership development, Strategic Planning, and faith formation. Prior to his work at M.W. Pautler & Associates, he was the Executive Director of the Institute for Catholic Education in Toronto, ON; Director or Education at the Halton Catholic District School Board; and Superintendent of Education for the Durham Catholic District School Board. Pautler holds a Master of Education, Educational Administration from the University of Toronto. He has been a Member at Large on the St. Jerome’s University Board since 2019, working on the Mission of Committee and Executive Committee Charters.
In accordance with the St. Jerome’s University Bylaw Article 6.3 both the Board Chair and Vice Chair are elected by members of the Board to serve a two-year term, following which they are is eligible for re-election for a second, consecutive two-year term. Further, in accordance with the St. Jerome’s University Bylaw, Article 3.3 (c) only Members at Large are eligible to serve as Board Chair or Vice Chair.
