For most of the 1950s and ‘60s, newspapers, whether metropolitan or small town, had reporters permanently assigned to cover religion. The religion reporter, sometimes called the religion editor, tracked various trends in Christian faiths lesser so in Judaism and Islam. With the decline in church attendance, coverage of religion virtually disappeared, and the religion reporter went the way of the labour reporter. Michael Enright, a former religion editor, argues that this has forced a re-thinking of religion and faith coverage, which has become “confused, confusing, and complicated.”
With over 50 years of journalistic experience, Michael Enright has held key positions in Canadian media. He has hosted many of CBC Radio's flagship programs, including This Country in the Morning, As It Happens, This Morning and, currently, The Sunday Edition. He also has extensive experience in print media. A member of the Order of Canada, Mr. Enright—a high school dropout–has received Honorary Doctorates from York University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and St. Thomas University in New Brunswick.
