12 Jan, 2018
If you’re like me, right now you’re probably doing a lot of research in any spare time you have to make sure that you’ve picked the right schools before applications are actually due and have to be submitted in just under a week. If you’re considering submitting an application to St. Jerome’s, you also probably have a lot of questions right now. The first question that you probably have on your mind is ‘what even is St. Jerome’s University??’

What's that?

I understand, it can be confusing, especially if you’ve never heard of SJU before. Simply put, St. Jerome’s University is a university within a larger university, the University of Waterloo!

SJU was founded in the Kitchener-Waterloo area as a small Catholic college over 150 years ago, was one of the founders of the University of Waterloo in 1957, and has been federated with UWaterloo since 1960! This partnership means that as a St. Jerome’s University student, you’re also a University of Waterloo student, and your degree will come from the University of Waterloo. SJU is also one of the 4 ‘University Colleges’ located on the University of Waterloo campus, all of which share similar relationships with UWaterloo, and offer courses in specialized areas of study. (Find out more about the history of St. Jerome’s University here)

St. Jerome’s University offers courses in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo, reflecting its history as a small Liberal Arts school. As an Arts student at UWaterloo, you can choose to co-register with SJU, giving you preferred access to the courses, small class sizes, and academic excellence that we offer. You can either do this by applying directly to St. Jerome’s University, or by applying to Honours Arts, or Arts and Business at the University of Waterloo, and then co-registering once you get here! Don’t worry though, if you’re co-registered with SJU, you still have full access to all of the other services that are offered by the University of Waterloo.

As a St. Jerome’s University student, you really can study whatever interests you, with full access to the courses offered by both SJU and Uwaterloo! (Check out the wide range of courses we offer here)

Not only does SJU provide top-notch courses, we also offer a supportive residence environment so that you can live just seconds away from your classes! Arts students at St. Jerome’s University are given preferred access to live in our small, tight-knit residence community at the heart of the University of Waterloo Campus!

Overall, and most importantly, St. Jerome’s University isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling. It’s the feeling you have when you’re surrounded by people who care about you and want you to succeed. It’s the feeling you have when you love what you’re learning and know that you can pursue whatever interests you. And it’s the feeling you have when you’ve found your new home.

If you’re looking for a post-secondary experience where you’re allowed to customize your education in order to study what you’re actually interested in, where your professors know your name and care about your success, and where you belong to a tight-knit community in which you feel at home, then St. Jerome’s University has what you’re looking for…
