All About the SJU Student Affairs Team
25 Sep, 2019
There have been a lot of exciting changes around SJU recently! One major undertaking has been to amalgamate all of our staff who interact directly with students into one very accessible network. Most of our team members have their offices in the same hallway- this makes it so much easier to find the right person to help you out!
So, what sorts of things can the people on our Student Affairs team help you with? What does our team want you to know about SJU? This post introduces the members of our team, and outlines what they are here to help you out with throughout your time at university.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
In my role, I’m lucky enough to work with all the areas of Student Affairs from residence and student life, to service-learning, wellness, scholarships and more! My goal is to support a consistently student-centered approach across our many initiatives that, together, encourage whole person development and, ideally, a transformative student experience. Students may connect with me because they want to bring a big new idea to life, or because they don’t know who to connect with on a very specific question—I’m happy to hear it all!
What do you love about working for SJU?
St. Jerome’s is the perfect size to have the best of both worlds. There is a strong sense of personal connection and community here that many thrive within, without eliminating access a broad spectrum of resources and services at UW.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
As Director of Campus Ministry I help our team provide liturgies and programming for the spiritual development of students.  I also provide counselling and meet with students on a one to one basis for mentoring.  Many students come to me to ask the faith and God questions and/or to delve deeper into their values and beliefs.  University is that time in life when many of these questions become important!  I love having my office in the spirituality center where students come to hang out and where people of all faith traditions and spiritual awareness can find a place!
What do you love about working for SJU?
What I love most about working at St. Jerome’s is our welcoming spirit and building of community!  I believe that as a Catholic University we can build strong leaders who live the gospel with Joy!

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
My role at SJU is to work with a wide variety of student leaders to provide meaningful programming opportunities for students in our community to get involved and really find their place at St. Jerome’s. I’m also lucky enough to spend the other half of my time in Campus Ministry, supporting our worshipping community and helping students and community members to grow spiritually. If you have any questions about getting involved at SJU, about Campus Ministry or about the student experience in general, you’re in the right place with me.
What do you love about working for SJU?
I love working at SJU because I’m a really proud alumni who wants to continue to see this community build. I think often about how when we add or take away just one person from our community, it becomes new again. I love being able to see how we grow and change, and how we continue to build SJU to be the place that we all know and love so very much.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
I help with the everyday processes of students and the student affairs team. So your silly questions are typically answered by me, and I love hearing them! In addition, I help with the coordination of scholarships at St. Jerome’s University, so if you have any questions about what is offered or how to apply, please do not hesitate to reach out.
What do you love about working for SJU?
I love working at St. Jerome’s because it’s a smaller community where I get to know students names, but I also get to be down to earth with the students who want an extra cheerleader on their team, or need some encouragement.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
My role as Assessment Specialist in Student Affairs has me working collaboratively with the whole SA team to ensure that the programs, services, and interactions with students that we facilitate are getting at the intended learning and impacts we plan for. My approach to this work involves lots of data, modelling, innovative practices, looking at the research literature, and really throwing ALL of the big questions out there that we seek to gain some understanding and insight into. Aside from these behind the scenes aspects of my role, I also provide support to academic advising and our service learning programs (ask me about SJU in Peru!).
What do you love about working for SJU?
The unique SJU community and all of the people connected to it. While I have been in a few different roles at SJ over the years, the community continues to be core and foundational for me. SJU is a pretty special place.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
I am here to talk about all things wellness- questions, ideas for programming, where to access supports, what to do if they are experiencing a difficult time here at SJU, etc. I would love for students to know that I am always a safe person to chat with!
A common question that comes my way is, “How can I get accommodations for my courses like I had in high school?” Another one is, “What is happening to me?” We have all sorts of resources available to help on campus, for everything from our PALs at SJU to help you with your studies, to UW Counselling Services to talk you through the transition into post-secondary. You’re not alone here and you can see me as a first point of contact at SJU for all things wellness.
What do you love about working for SJU?
Our community is SO kind! We check in with one another and we can be human here. Something very touching for me is that students often ask how I am doing after we have a difficult conversation together- there are no limits to showing how you care here at SJU.

Jamie Hall | Residence Life Coordinator

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
My role is to support students and student leaders living in residence. As such, feel free to ask me about all things residence! This includes but is certainly not limited to your physical living space, your experience living in residence, what’s available to you as a resident, and the various programs and initiatives that residence offers.
What do you love about working for SJU?
What I love about working at SJU is the inclusive community that exists here. Anyone and everyone is welcomed here with warm hearts and open arms.

What do you love about working for SJU?
I love being able to walk alongside students to make meaningful connections both in the surrounding community here in KW and in our broader global community.

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
I would describe my role as an “academic GPS”! I’m here to help students, faculty, and staff navigate through undergraduate policies, regulation, and procedures. I help students with everything and anything. One of the great things about my role is the variety. No one day is quite the same, and you never know what a new day might bring.
What do you love about working for SJU?
That the people at SJU are all authentic and genuine.

Jessica Huston | Residence and Student Life Coordinator

How would you describe your role within the SJU community?
My role is largely within Residence, helping students apply to live in Residence during their first years and upper years as they choose, and working with students as they transition to living on campus and as students at St. Jerome’s and UWaterloo. St. Jerome’s has many opportunities as well for students to become involved with the community here, through both student leadership positions and events to take part in, so my role also works with the development of meaningful options for students to connect with these opportunities within our community.
What do you love about working for SJU?
The community, which brings opportunities to be vulnerable and creative in our conversations and problem solving. Whether it’s discussions about being more sustainable or having conversations about social justice, the community of students, staff and faculty really work to make the world and our community a better place and I love that.

We will be sharing a new student leader profile by Friday! In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions, please send those to me: outreach@sju.ca. If you’re looking for more interesting info about SJU, check out our social media!
