S.C.C. Mission Statement
The Student Catholic community is a community of post-secondary students
who share a common belief in God and in the gospel of Christ. Rooted
in the Catholic faith, the community expresses its identity through
living out gospel values. The identity of the community manifests
itself in three interconnected directions: spiritual growth, community
building, and outreach.
Spiritual growth is nurtured through opportunities for students and others to deepen their faith, to better understand their relationship with God and the Church, and to situate their faith in the contemporary Canadian world and context.
The S.C.C. strives to provide a supportive environment where all
students feel welcome. The S.C.C. plans events that build community
spirit and
a sense of belonging. Through outreach S.C.C. shares its values
with society and ultimately creates a larger community structure
of shared
values.

Canadian Catholic Students' Association @ SJU

SJU students participate in regional conference at King's College in January
The Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry (CCCM) and the Canadian Catholic Student Association (CCSA) has developed through close connections and collaboration. The International Chaplain of the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) has stated that CCCM is one of the strongest and most developed Catholic Campus Ministry/Chaplain associations in the world. This is due not only to the close chaplain/student relationship but also due to the tremendous support and leadership that the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has provided since establishing an Episcopal Liaison on 1946 and a National Chaplain (National Coordinator) in 1948.
The CCSA @ SJU is a part of a national student group connected to Campus Ministries across Canada and sponsored by the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops which dates back to the 1760s.
Our Core Purpose:
Uniting students who
witness the Gospel on campus.
Rooted in the Gospel of Christ and in the spirit of Vatican II, the (CCSA) works to nurture Christian student leadership, and to support prayerful, prophetic, and pastoral action within the context of Canadian post-secondary education. The CCSA dates back to the first Catholic Colleges 1760's in Quebec and 1860 in English speaking Canada.
The Newman Clubs began in the early 1900's. James Cardinal McQuigan in 1946 formed the first national body of Newman Clubs and Catholic College student groups so as to join Pax Romana (IMCS). The CCSA has evolved out of the Catholic Colleges and Newman systems, to be in its present form - a national association representing all Catholic students on campuses across Canada.
The Student Catholic Community is a community of post-secondary students who share a common belief in God and in the gospel of Christ. Rooted in the Catholic faith, the community expresses its identity through living out gospel values. The identity of the community manifests itself in three interconnected directions: spiritual growth, community building, and outreach.
While participation is voluntary, students are invited to take an active role in planning and participating in liturgies.

St. Jerome's Feast Day - Sunday, September 27th, 2009
At all Masses we will ask the Spirit of St. Jerome to guide us in all that we do on campus.
Who was St. Jerome?
St. Jerome lived from 345 to 420.
St. Jerome was a scripture scholar, translating most of the Old Testament from the Hebrew. He was a strong student, scholar, bishop and pope. St. Augustine said of him, "What Jerome is ignorant of, no mortal has ever known."
St. Jerome is particularly important for having made a translation of the Bible which came to be called the Vulgate. He came from Dalmatia and studied in Rome, Palestine and Germany. He was fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Chaldaic.
St. Jerome was a man of deep prayer as well as great virtues. He also was known to have a bad temper! Jerome died in Bethlehem on September 30 in 420. That is why we celebrate his life on September 28.

Fall Retreat
The Student Catholic Community will be hosting a Busy Students’ Retreat from Sunday Feb 28 to March 4th. This is a great opportunity to take some time to be still and reflect during a busy term. Students who have participated in the past have found it to be a chance to focus and accomplish all the things that need to be done because of the time they have taken to be still. Please see the bulletin and posters for more details.
