A Dynamic Community of Individuals

St. Jerome's University is a Residential Learning Community - a place where we emphasize the lived experience as one of the greatest possible sources of learning at University. Our dynamic programming compliments that which you'll get in the classroom - so the focus is on building well-rounded students who are ready to take on life's challenges.

Looking for leadership opportunities to sink your teeth into? What about taking part in an overseas international service learning project? Want to be engaged in the community by joining our community service projects? Not to worry - in residence at SJU, you'll find it all.

Our students speak to the experience - and for many, the residence experience is fundamental in helping them figure some of the big questions in their lives: Who am I? Where do I want to be in ten years? Am I a leader? What are my skills and how can I apply them to my interests?

As you will see from the student profiles below, we are an inclusive community that has individuals from all programs and faculties at the University of Waterloo and St. Jerome's University.

The first time I visited St. Jerome’s I was impressed with the attention staff and faculty gave to me. They were willing to take the time to give me the personalized information I was looking for. St Jerome’s has encouraged me to try things and as a result I’ve become much more confidant and outgoing. My advice to first years is to try not to be nervous about fitting in; people here will accept you for who you are. SJU is a place where you can really become the person you want to be. More than that even, It’s a place you can feel safe–where else could you leave your laundry hanging for days undisturbed?”

I chose to live at St. Jerome’s because I liked the welcoming feel of the residence facilities. The smaller community means I’m not just a number. I’ve made friends with almost everyone and the residence staff knows my name. This summer I’m traveling with a group of 10 students from SJU to Peru to work with a group of female fairtrade coffee growers. We’ll be helping them to instal rainwater harvesting and water filtration systems – which is right up my alley as an Environment student. My best advice is not to choose your residence based on where your friends are going, choose somewhere you can see yourself living everyday. I did and I absolutely love it here.

A friend told me about St. Jerome’s. She loved the tight community, delicious food and had an allround great time in her first year. After my first year living at St. Jerome’s, I couldn’t agree with her more. I’ve made a lot of wonderful friends, had the experience of working on the Residence Council and participated in many activities like a pool tournament and the Halloween haunted house. I’ve enjoyed the year so much that I’m returning as an upper year student next year. If you’re looking for a place to call home and an experience to sink your teeth into – St. Jerome’s is it.

I was initially drawn to St. Jerome’s Residence because I wanted more than just a place to eat, sleep and do homework. Here, I’ve been able to take part in activities like snack night, collaborate with other students, and be a part of something larger than myself. Eating with friends in the cafeteria is like dinnertime at home when everyone comes together to share their day. I’ve never heard any of my classmates refer to their own residences as home, but St. Jerome’s is my home.

A few of my high school teachers recommended St. Jerome’s to me and when I came to visit I really liked the small, homey atmosphere. The best part about living at St. Jerome’s is having lots of supportive friends around. They’ve been encouraging and I’ve gained the confidence to step up into a leadership role and become a residence Don. I’ve been able to take risks putting my ideas into actions without worrying that I won’t be successful. The most important thing you can do as a first year student is to embrace your talents and make yourself known.”

I came to St. Jerome’s because of its inviting atmosphere and its
Catholic affiliation appealed to me. Since living here, I’ve met lots of new and different people I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet in my small hometown. As a member of the Residence Life Team, I planned and managed a trip to Toronto to see a Jays game. I had never organized something that big before and planning the trip made me feel more mature and responsible. The staff trust you and they give you the latitude to try new things. I really felt supported. My advice for choosing a residence: go with your gut. If you like the atmosphere of a place, that place is right for you.

The thing that sold me on St. Jerome’s Residence was the lounge. At that point of the tour I didn’t even need to see the rooms – I knew I wanted to live at SJU. I really like the shared space because it lets me get together with my friends in residence and watch TV, play pool or pingpong, or go to our great Lounge Parties. I also love the traditions at St. Jerome’s – House Dinners, Snow Bowl, Fall Formal, Floor Competitions and Frost Week. As an engineering student, I have a very demanding academic schedule but there’s always something going on at SJU when I’m in need of some ‘balance’.

I wanted to live at St. Jerome’s because of the smaller residence population – I was looking for the opportunity to get to know the people I live with. This year, I have been part of the Residence Life Team – a group that focuses on providing exciting programming and activities for all residence. By doing so, I’ve been able to get involved and give back to the residence that has encouraged me to come out of my shell and hone my skills and talents. I would definitely encourage all first year students to put themselves out there since St. Jerome’s closeknit community makes getting involved easy and fun.
