In his research, David Seljak , Professor and Chair of Religious Studies , examines the very fabric of Canada 's multi-cultural society. In 2005, he and co-editor Paul Bramadat of the University of Winnipeg published Religion and Ethnicity in Canada , the first comprehensive study of non-Christian religions in the country and the first of three volumes examining the dynamic connections between religion and identity, ethnicity, and nationalism. 2007 should see the publication of volume two by the University of Toronto Press. It takes up the complex topic of Christianity in Canada. This book, Seljak says, examines the "neglected question of how various ethnic groups are shaping Canadian Christianity and, in turn, the broader Canadian ethno-religious landscape." His latest project was a research report for the Multiculturalism and Human Rights Program at the Department of Canadian Heritage entitled "Religion and Multiculturalism in Canada : The Challenge of Religious Discrimination and Intolerance". Seljak's research promises to add to our understanding of the increasing complexity of Canada 's religious landscape and the challenges that this new diversity poses to the creation of a multicultural, open, and egalitarian society. |
