Stanley Fogel (English)

Author of books on American novelists, Canadian literature, and travel writing, English professor Stan Fogel has refocused his studies outside the country. Fogel is currently bringing a postmodern critical eye to the culture and daily life of Cuba.

Given North American media's chronic distortion of life in Cuba, some basic questions need answers: Is Cuba a utopia or an oppressive Marxist regime? How is Cuban culture-arts, music, literature, theatre, sports-shaped by politics? How do the Cuban government and people respond to abiding outside threats?

Fogel's research focuses, of necessity, on intense moments of social, political, and artistic transition, for Cuba is a country that has made major changes in a short period of time. Constant adapations to new lifestyles-that is its story since the revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power.

Fogel, who will be back in Cuba in May 2007, hopes that his current research will provide a better understanding of how culture and communism interact. For the fruits of this work, enrol in his "Travel Literature" course or take in one of his guest lectures at the Higher Institute of the Arts in Havana .
