Paul Moynihan

Paul Moynihan (BASc ’87)
Managing Director, Global Financial Advisory, Rothschild, (Canada) Inc.

That brings us full circle to Paul – Dane’s father. Paul decided to come to St. Jerome’s in 1982, joining his older siblings in the Moynihan tradition. An active member of the SJU community, Paul’s two-plus years in residence included stints on the Bagbiters football team and the Maple Rockies hockey team. He was part of the inaugural St. Jerome’s All Male Glee Club, which included an amateur performance at Conestoga Mall. Inspired by a picture in his dorm room, Paul’s motto, “Aim High,” helped him through his Chemical Engineering program and kept him grounded with his friends in residence, even while they indulged in occasional practical jokes, summer BBQs, science experiments, and learning to appreciate the rock band Queen on a deeper level, courtesy of Kevin (BA ‘85) and Joe Coates (BASc ’87)  Paul felt like he truly had two homes at the uWaterloo campus: one with his engineering buddies and one with the SJU community. Just as important, SJU gave Paul a faith-based education shared with like-minded students and a chance to live his values.

In 1987, Paul got a full-time job with Imperial Oil. Three years later, he did an MBA at the University of Western Ontario, then was recruited into the investment banking business in Toronto. He worked for the investment arm of TD Bank from 1994–97, then spent four years with TD Securities in Calgary. In 2002, he and a colleague, Bob Gibson, went out on their own, founding Mustang Capital Partners. Mustang specialized in mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector. During its eight years of operation, the firm advised on 40 transactions for a total of $4 billion. Mustang merged with Rothschild, a global investment firm, in 2011. Paul is co-head of the Calgary office, advising both Canadian and global clients on mergers and acquisitions in the oil and gas industry. He is passionate about his work and the relationships he builds with clients. And he still plays hockey, plus he enjoys hiking and running. He has run two marathons and plans to do more.

Paul married his high school sweetheart, Colleen Couch, in the SJU chapel in 1987, with Fr. Norm Choate presiding. Dane is their eldest child, and is currently attending uWaterloo and living in residence at SJU, followed by Connor (15) and Claire (13). Paul has always tried to balance family, education, career and life experience, and enjoys giving back to the community.
