Integrative Learning and Electronic Portfolios

St. Jerome's University at the University of Waterloo
Teaching and Learning ePortfolio Conference
Proposal deadline: May2, 2008

Location: Waterloo, Ontario
Venue: St. Jerome's University at the University of Waterloo
Dates: July 7 th- 8 th , 2008

One of the most important goals and challenges of higher education is developing students' abilities to integrate their learning--over time, across courses, and between academic, workplace, and community life. The undergraduate experience is often viewed by students as a fragmented landscape of requirements that they can "check off" as they move through their programs. Seldom are students encouraged to "make connections" between the learning that occurs in all aspects of their academic and personal lives. Yet we want students to find ways to put the pieces together and develop habits of mind that will prepare them to make informed judgments in the conduct of personal, professional, and civic life. Electronic Portfolios are important tools in this process as they provide a space for students to reflect on and create digital portraits of their evolving identities as learners. Beyond promoting a more holistic approach to learning, ePortfolios can also be a good "measure" of how and where students are developing competencies in a number of areas.

Join us at St. Jerome's University from July 7 th to July 8 th to share your ePortfolio knowledge, experiences and insights. Submission of proposals for individual or team presentations, roundtables, workshops and posters/displays are all welcome. The main themes at this conference will consist of:

  1. ePortfolios and Integrative Learning : How do ePortfolios allow students to "make connections" between learning contexts and within learning contexts? How do ePortfolios affect how students learn? What does your research show about student learning and ePortfolios? How can ePortfolios be used to achieve learning outcomes?
  2. Teaching and Learning with ePortfolios
    • Student Voices and ePortfolios: What do students have to say about ePortfolios? What is their experience using this tool? How have ePortfolios helped them to articulate their learning? How do ePortfolios affect students beyond the classroom? These sessions will showcase lessons learned from students' perspectives in their own words.
    • ePortfolios in the Classroom: How do instructors use ePortfolios in their classrooms? What types of activities and pedagogies are being developed? What are some tips and strategies for instructors thinking about using these tools? How are ePortfolios assessed?
  3. ePortfolio Tools and Technology : What are the types of software needed to use and organize ePortfolios? How difficult is it to use these tools? What are some campus experiences of implementing ePortfolios?
  4. ePortfolios and Reflection: What is reflective learning? How does it affect students? What is the importance of reflective learning? What are some interesting approaches/activities to promote reflection and metacognitive development in different disciplines?
