The Community Based Learning initiative provides students enrolled in various courses at SJU an experiential or community-based learning experience. The two primary roles of the Centre for Responsible Citizenship are (1) helping SJU faculty develop and support courses that have an experiential, community-based component in them; and (2) working with students to find the right placements for their courses.
The CBL continues to pilot new courses containing major
community-based learning components. These new courses add to the
already existing courses that have substantial experiential-learning
elements, including SMF 460 Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies:
Practicum.
The CBL initiative is vital to the work of the Centre for Responsible Citizenship and the mission of St. Jerome’s University. At SJU, we believe that that students are agents of positive social change and that, as an institution of higher learning in the tradition of Catholic social teaching, SJU has a responsibility to foster a sense of the common good in students, faculty, and staff. The CBL initiative is one way SJU attempts to live out this mission.
