Philosophy at SJU

The general goal of a catholic liberal education institution like St. Jerome's is to help young people become complete, accomplished, better human beings through the education of their minds and of its different aspects: imaginative, rational, emotional, etc. But the development and the well-being of these components requires order and direction, which, in the perspective of philosophy, comes mainly from reason. This is why philosophy, the rational pursuit of true answers to the most fundamental questions - whether they be about human nature, the good, the universe or the existence of God, to name a few - sees itself at the very heart of any education that aims at liberating the mind form the slavery of ignorance, error, or superficial daily preoccupations.

Committed to undergraduate education, the philosophy department at St. Jerome's offers a variety of study programs built around both courses that are taught by St. Jerome's faculty and courses (click on Philosophy) that are taught by main campus faculty. In accordance with the mission of the university, the department also welcomes many students who want to satisfy their general education requirements without majoring in philosophy.

All philosophy courses offered by the St. Jerome's department are taught in the intimate atmosphere of the St. Jerome's building, which generally implies smaller classrooms and always allows an easy contact and interaction with faculty.
