Welcome to the Academic Departments of St. Jerome's University. We offer courses in two faculties, Mathematics and Arts, in twelve academic disciplines, and in four Interdisciplinary Studies areas - Legal Studies, Medieval Studies, Italian Studies, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies. All of these academic courses, integrated with their counterparts at the University of Waterloo, lead to University of Waterloo degrees.

Our most distinguishing academic characteristic is a commitment to the principles of a liberal arts education and a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level. All of our faculty teach at the undergraduate level and are evaluated on the basis of the St. Jerome’s commitment to teaching excellence. From this commitment flows an interdisciplinary community that aims to mentor our students through the diverse programs they choose.

Participating in St. Jerome’s academic life means that you will meet a wide array of leading scholars and if you have a narrow view of what the liberal arts mean, you may in fact come across some surprises. You will of course have the opportunity to discuss philosophy with scholars of Aristotle, Aquinas, Arendt, or Maritain. You may want to engage professors of national reputation in the intricacies of understanding Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Blake. Perhaps your interests focus on understanding social phenomena like the family, or legal systems, or perhaps religion and identity – there are a number of prominent professors here who would be glad to converse with you on these topics as well. But you may be surprised to come across one of the world’s experts in Quantum Computing in our hallways. You may not expect to meet one of Canada’s leading historians of the Arctic at SJU, but you may. You will meet scholars whose interests range from medieval history to our age of globalization and transnational identity; academics who have been invited to lecture around the globe but come back to engage you in your interests and their field of study. Academic life at St. Jerome’s University will take you beyond you – to a world full of questions, wonder, and awe.
