The Sociology Department at St. Jerome's University is committed to teaching excellence, undergraduate education and graduate student development. Rooted in the liberal arts tradition, we cover a wide and diverse range of courses, from policing, criminology and the sociology of mental disorder, to community, urban culture, power and parenting and contemporary debates in sociological theory. In the main, our approach in all of our courses is qualitative and interpretive, though quantitative research is both addressed and examined. We also cover a variety of theoretical perspectives from the broad range of criminological theory to phenomenology and hermeneutics and from the ancient Socratic approach to questioning to contemporary critical theory. Our main goals in teaching sociology are to encourage both a critical and engaged relation to the world whether at the local, national and international level and whether with regard to the past, present or future.
The SJU Sociology Department is heavily involved in the Legal Studies and Criminology option and the Legal Studies degree program. Both are University of Waterloo programs housed at St. Jerome's and offer students an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to the study of legal studies and criminology.
All sociology courses offered by the St. Jerome's department are taught in the intimate atmosphere of the St. Jerome's building, which allows an easy contact and interaction with faculty.
