Philosophy: Programs

 

Note A student may enrol through St. Jerome’s University in either the General or Honours Academic Plan in Philosophy.

Three-Year General Philosophy

Thirty courses, with a minimum of ten courses in Philosophy, and with a Philosophy average of at least 65%. The Philosophy courses must include (a) one of 145, 200J, 216, 240, 341, 342, 440A, 440B, 441, 442; (b) one of 218J, 221; (c) two of 200A, 200B, 378, 380-386.

Four-Year General Philosophy

Forty courses, with a minimum of fourteen courses in Philosophy, and with a Philosophy average of at least 68%. The Philosophy courses must include the same required courses as the Three-Year General Academic Plan.

Honours Philosophy

Forty courses, with a minimum of eighteen courses in Philosophy, and with a Philosophy average of at least 75%. The Philosophy courses must include (a) 240, and one of 216, 341, 342, 440A, 440B, 441, 442; (b) 218J or 221, and 322; (c) 200A and 200B, and one of 378, 380-386; (d) three from (A) and (B), with at least one from each: (A) 255, 256, 355, 359, 363, 450J, 455, 456; (B) 258, 350, 362, 387, 446, 470; (e) the total number of courses must include at least six courses on the 300 or 400 level, with at least three on the 400 level; (f) St. Jerome’s students are expected to take 450J if available.

Honours Philosophy (Arts and Business Co-op and Regular)

The requirements are the same as the Honours Academic Plan, except that only 16 courses in Philosophy are required. See the Arts and Business requirements in the University of Waterloo Undergraduate Calendar.

Philosophy Joint Honours

At least fourteen courses must be in Philosophy, and with a Philosophy average of at least 75%. The Philosophy courses must include (a) 240, and one of 216, 341, 342, 400A, 400B, 441, 442; (b) 218J or 221, and 322; (c) 200A and 200B, and one of 378, 380-386; (d) at least one from (A) and one from (B): (A) 255, 256, 355, 359, 363, 450J, 455, 456; (B) 258, 350, 362, 387, 446, 470; (e) the total number of courses must include at least two courses on the 400 level.

Minor in Philosophy

Any ten courses (no more than three at the 100 level) in Philosophy approved by the St. Jerome's Department Chair.
