2007-2008 Beyond Borders Students

Why Beyond Borders?

I decided to apply and stay in Beyond Borders because it was a wonderful opportunity for me to experience a different culture.
Sarah, History and Classical Studies (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

I love to travel and learn about people and cultures. Beyond Borders is the perfect opportunity to have a cross cultural experience to make memories and friends ... in Nicaragua!
Rebecca, Religious Studies (Nicaragua)

I believe it will be a great opportunity to work in a different environment, gain knowledge and further shape who I am and want to be.
Nicky, Social Development Studies (Ecuador)

When I heard about Beyond Borders I realized this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I wanted to broaden my perspective of the world and experience a new culture.
Angèle, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (Nicaragua)

I want an adventure that will help me gain insight into both my personal views and the different ways that society works.
Amanda, English and Literature (Ecuador)

I chose to take part in the Beyond Borders program in order to celebrate life with people of a different culture and place.
Dave, Geography and Environmental Studies (Ecuador)

As a political science major I relish the opportunity to see methods of social development on the ground, and debate the effectiveness of development strategies.
Whitney, Honours Arts & Business, Political Science (Ghana)

I want to meet "the other."
Brittany, History and Business Co-op (Botswana)

Beyond Borders has provided me with the opportunity I never would have had to go abroad and experience things I have only read about in books or seen on TV.
Jolene, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies / Minor in Religious Studies (Ukraine)

This summer I hope to learn a brand new way of living, of seeing the world and most importantly, seeing myself.
Valerie, Social Development Studies (Ukraine)

I feel it will be a great challenge and an amazing opportunity to connect with others in another culture and learn more about myself along the way.
Catherine, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (Ghana)

This is an important time for me because it allows me to embark on a very special journey before my life goes from school to a career.
Afroza, Kinesiology (Malawi)

It's a unique opportunity for self-growth and critical awareness, both of which I feel are essential to a university education.
Bryan, Biomedical Science / Minor in Economics (Botswana)

As a fourth year student at Waterloo, I have come to realize that you can only learn so much through a textbook.
Lindsey, Speech Communication and English (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

I was looking for an opportunity to get a glimpse of what life is like outside of my North American bubble.
Scott, History and Legal Studies (Peru)

I wanted to discover a new culture and encounter new people.
Emma, Arts (Ghana)
