The 2009-2010 Teresa Dease Lecture

Promoting Peace: Millennium Development Goals and the United Nations

Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, Former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN

Friday, September 25, 2009 / 7:30 p.m.

THIS LECTURE HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS

IIn the past decade, Ambassador Chowdhury has made promoting a culture of peace his hallmark.  His work inspired the 1999 United Nations General Assembly adoption of the “Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace,” the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World (2001-2010),” and the groundbreaking UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on the role of women in peace and security. Tonight’s lecture will focus on Ambassador Chowdhury’s commitment to promoting peace around the world.

Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the United Nations, was Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York from 1996 to 2001.  In his long and estimable career, among other things, he has served as President of the United Nations Security Council and Chairman and President of the UNICEF Executive Board.  Ambassador Chowdhury is the recipient of the U Thant Peace Award and the UNESCO Gandhi Gold Medal for Culture of Peace and the Honorary Chair of the International Day of Peace NGO Committee at the United Nations.
